Fructose intolerance in 30-40% of all people
Time and again, athletes come to us complaining about stomach/intestinal problems. We would like to shed some light on this issue, at least if the cause is the intake of fructose.
- In the western hemisphere, it is assumed that 30-40% of all people suffer from fructose intolerance! This percentage is based on scientific studies outside of sport; under stress, this figure could be even higher.
- Important: There are two different forms of fructose intolerance: the rare hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI), which is caused by an enzyme deficiency, and fructose malabsorption, which we will refer to below.
- In the case of fructose malabsorption, there is a deficiency of a certain transport protein (Glut5), so that the fructose cannot be transported sufficiently.
We recommend the following article: NDR article Fructose
- If you want to be sure whether this is the cause of the problems in the digestive tract, you can do this with an H2 breath test!
- If it turns out that you suffer from fructose malabsorption, then you need to look at how severe the malabsorption is, because our body is able to rebuild a certain amount of Glut5 proteins through gradual "gut" training.
- Important: If you want or need to avoid fructose completely, we strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the different types of sugar. We have just seen another competitor marketing its products as "fructose-free", but the drinks and energy gels contain sucrose (household sugar) or invert sugar syrup. Both types of sugar consist of 50% fructose. So even if fructose is not listed as an ingredient, it can be contained in various ingredients
This is exactly why we developed our BASIC FORMULA line 2 years ago. First as a drink, and now also as an energy gel. And we promise - we will be launching it on the market this year as a liquid energy gel.
